How Much Yarn Do I Need For a Blanket?

Determining the correct amount of yarn for a blanket is one of the most common challenges for crocheters and knitters. Buy too little, and you risk playing "yarn chicken" at the end of your project—often discovering that your exact dye lot is sold out. Buy too much, and you're left with expensive scraps. Our free yarn calculator helps you avoid both.

Whether you are making a crochet baby blanket, a chunky knit throw, or a massive king-size afghan, our Yarn Blanket Calculator takes the guesswork out of the equation. We use an area-based yardage calculator combined with specific stitch multipliers to give you a highly accurate estimate of how many skeins you need.

How Our Yarn Yardage Calculator Works

The math behind estimating yarn for a project is simple but effective: (Width × Height) × Stitch Multiplier × Yarn Weight Multiplier.

  • Stitch Multiplier: Different stitches consume different amounts of yarn. A dense crochet Bobble stitch will eat up significantly more yarn than a loose Moss stitch or standard Single Crochet. Our tool automatically adjusts for your stitch pattern.
  • Yarn Weight Multiplier: Thinner yarns (like fingering or lace) require more yardage to cover the same surface area compared to bulky or jumbo yarns. We factor this in whether you're using DK, Worsted, or Super Bulky.
  • Safety Buffer (15%): We automatically add a 15% safety buffer to your final yarn calculation. This accounts for tension inconsistencies, swatching, tying in ends, and the occasional mistake.

Standard Blanket Size Chart

Not sure what size to make? Here are standard blanket dimensions used in the crochet and knitting pattern industry:

  • Baby Blanket: 30" x 36" - Perfect for strollers, car seats, and cribs. Typically requires 700-1000 yards depending on yarn weight.
  • Throw / Afghan: 50" x 60" - The standard couch companion. Often takes 2000-3000 yards.
  • Twin Bed: 66" x 90" - A great size for a child's bed or single bed.
  • Queen Bed: 90" x 100" - A large project requiring significant time and many skeins of yarn.
  • King Bed: 108" x 100" - A massive undertaking; be sure to secure your dye lots in advance!

Always remember to check your gauge! While this knitting and crochet blanket calculator provides an excellent baseline heavily rooted in mathematical averages, your personal tension (whether you crochet or knit tightly or loosely) will always affect the final yardage. Doing a 4x4 inch gauge swatch is the absolute best way to refine your numbers before buying yarn online or in-store.
